Airbrush Makeup primer How To and Review: silicone free vs traditional and airbrushable primer

What is the best primer for airbrush makeup? Where can I buy a silicone free primer? Do I even need a primer with airbrush makeup? These are some of the most common questions I get in my classes and online. The subject is vast, the answer to the questions needn't be. Let's do this!

Prepping the skin for airbrush makeup is as necessary as it is with your traditional beauty routine. The general rule is simply to avoid oil based formulas, which would by nature repel or destabilize any liquid that is layered upon them, and use as little product as possible.  If your skin is young, supple and blemish free, a simple light moisturizer used a few minutes before application will do. For any other skin condition (mature, oily, dry and so on), the general rule is to find the right balance between your skin care routine and the finish and consistency of the airbrush product you are going to use. If you came to this post thinking that airbrush makeup is one and the same for all brands, you should know that each product varies according to composition and manufacturer, just like traditional makeup does.

Airbrushable primers
Many brands of airbrush makeup produce their own ready to airbrush primers. These are generally very light formulas designed to moisturize the skin with the best compatibility for the product that will follow. They are mostly water based, such as Tickled Pink or Luminess, or might contain a light amount of dymethicone, such as Belloccio. If you have normal skin and live in a dry climate you may benefit from these formulas and their lightness, however some people might find them a little too thin, and might prefer a more comforting finish.  Temptu Brilliant Glow is a new airbrushable primer which is silicone based and has a much thicker consistency than other products. As the name implies, it adds a very subtle luminosity to the skin, and was created to mitigate the matte finish of Temptu's Perfect Canvas foundation. Because of its density, you will need an airbrush and compressor of the same power as Temptu's, however you can still apply this with a brush or sponge if you have a less powerful machine (such as the ones intended for water based makeup only).

Silicone Free primers
What if you want to avoid silicone in your skin care altogether? While silicone is inert and does not cause allergies, some people are sensitive to its prolonged use, meaning they show signs of intolerance such as blemishes and irritation. In these cases, silicone free alternatives will be the only options. While less common, silicone free primers do exist. Smashbox makes Primer Water, a water based product that can be used for both prepping the skin and as a makeup finishing spray, with a super light consistency. Milk Makeup produces the cult favorite Hydro Grip primer, with a more comforting gel like consistency and a more luminous finish, and mostly natural ingredients. If you wish to stay on the natural path, Nurturing Force produces its famous Blot Out Offensive and Twinkle Not Wrinkle primers, which we reviewed extensively in this post.  If you are in Europe, two products really stand out. For oily or combination skin, Ten Image Professional Matt Primer provides a super long lasting matte finish. You can use it on your T zone and even very sparingly on the eyelids to mattify the eyelid and prevent any cracking of your airbrushed eyeshadow. Bronx Colors Cosmetics Studio Line Magic Primer has a light, creamy texture, is very moisturizing and provides a lasting luminous finish that will add a very healthy glow to more opaque foundation lines.

Traditional primers
Let's say that my preferred airbrush makeup is water based. Would the presence of silicone in a primer really affect the durability and finish of water based airbrush makeup? Generally speaking, not really. It really depends on the concentration of silicone and other plasticizers in the formula. Personally, I would stay away from super slick formulas such as Urban Decay's or Benefit, but a the presence of common silicones such as dymethicone or cyclopentasiloxane in a primer does not affect the finish or durability, so much so that even the skin care sold by Dinair to be used with their products contains them. British airbrush makeup brand AirBase produces a perfect cross over between the two worlds: First Base Perfecting Primer is a Swiss formula with hydrating platinum technology that is slick at first but absorbs quickly to a soft, matte finish that is perfect both for their silicone formula and for any traditional makeup. Temptu's classic S/B Primer is a rich, super smooth formula that leaves the skin beautifully soft and mattified, and has the gorgeous light fragrance of its S/B line. It's also reasonably priced, which makes it the preferred choice of many. For the eyelids, regardless of the composition of the airbrushed eyeshadow, Make Up Forever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Mattifying is a perfect choice, just use it very sparingly and your eyeshadow will not crack even on textured, very oily eyelids.

Airbrush makeup primer review: Nurturing Force Blot Out Offensive &Twinkle Not Wrinkle Eye Cream

A while ago we introduced Nurturing Force on our pages with our review or their Airbrush and Brush Cleaner. Today we'd like to tell you about two more products from this fantastic brand specialized in airbrush makeup friendly, HD compatible products.

Nurturing Force Face Primer
Blot Out Offensive has been Nurturing Force's flagship product for several years now. We found out about it while browsing the Camera Ready Cosmetics website, then read enthusiastic reviews on Kett's website and saw YouTube raves by Koren Zander. All we had to do was try this out for ourselves and see if it would live up to the high expectations the reviews created. The product has a very pleasant frothy consistency that makes it similar to whipped marshmallow filling, with no hint of fragrance, which I personally appreciate. It dries very fast on the skin, so it needs to be applied quickly and in small quantities. As its name suggests, this Aloe Vera, silicone free formula is an instant mattifier whose primary goal is to keep oil production under control, improving the duration of foundation. I have tried it both on myself and on several others, and I am happy to report that the primer does what it promises, significantly reducing oil production in the most oil prone areas like the T zone. I would not venture on specific duration times for its mattifying effect as this is subject to individual pre dispositions, as it would be for any other product. My own T zone tends to be quite oily, especially in the summer, and I found that Blot Out Offensive held up very well throughout the day. Despite the absence of silicone the cream also has a noticeable filling power, smoothing enlarged pores without blocking them. I especially appreciate the absence of silicone as this allows the primer to be used on those who have an intolerance to it and it makes it ideal for water based makeup. Its very matte finish means it may not be the best choice for the under eye area, but this is where Nurturing Force's next brilliant product comes into play.

Nurturing Force Eye Primer
Twinkle Not Wrinkle eye cream and base is an HD primer for eyes, also based on Aloe Vera and enriched with Hyaluronic Acid and Cherry Kernel Oil. This product does contain silicone (Dimethicone), which makes its texture very smooth and more similar to a traditional cream. Unlike Blot Out Offensive you can take your time applying this, but just like the face primer it has no fragrance at all. The feel and final finish is very soft, hydrated and luxurious, but, unlike many other primers, never too slick. It provides an excellent base for eye makeup, improving durability and helping against creasing. When used with traditional powder eye shadow it will also dramatically improve the color payoff.

We simply love Nurturing Force. This family run business has a strong commitment to natural ingredients, excellent quality and a special attention to the needs of airbrush makeup. They are a regular presence at most of the major trade shows, where they often offer their products in special money saving kits. The brand includes several other products that we hope to review in the future. We also hope they will heed our suggestion and finally come out with the only thing that seems to be missing from their line: a natural ingredients based airbrush makeup fixing spray!

For those of you reading this in Europe, Nurturing Force products can also be ordered from Guru Makeup Emporium in London.

Drag Airbrush Makeup video tutorial with Temptu Pro Multicolors!

100% airbrushed eyes with Temptu
Is silicone based airbrush makeup really viable for eyes? A lot of makeup artists love airbrushing foundation, but quite a few still have doubts when it comes to eyeshadows, especially with silicone based makeup. Maybe they are just too fond of their brushes, or maybe they haven't experimented at length with the possibilities that silicone colours can mean to eye makeup. More realistically, they may be wary of the challenges that the very mobile and often uneven skin on eye area poses, especially when using a medium that requires a relatively long drying time.

Airbrushed with Temptu
When Temptu Pro came out with a collection of new S/B shades called Multicolors I couldn't wait to try them and confront those very doubts for myself. As always I purchased my set from wonderful CRC Makeup, who ship worldwide. Drag makeup has always been the perfect context in which to test the possibilities offered by any makeup line, stretching them both creatively and technically. I was inspired by the makeup of LaLa McCallan, which is always airbrushed in its entirety (with water based colours) safe for an undercoat of creme products used to create an even canvas for airbrushing on top. I decided to pursue a very classic (and hopefully classy!) at this stage, leaving more experimental looks for the next round.

Airbrushed with Temptu
The results of the experiment are in this video, of which I am also proud as it is, as far as I know, the first entirely airbrushed drag makeup tutorial ever. The colours used for the eyes are all from the Multi Colors set. The set consists of 12 wonderful shades, which you can see in the airbrushed swatches posted below. The colours are of course extremely pigmented and vibrant, and like the rest of Temptu's S/B line the coverage is fantastic. There are ten matte shades and two shimmers, Pearl and Platinum, created especially for this set and not included in the standard Shimmers Set they offer. Application, as you can see in the video, is extremely smooth.

Drag Airbrush Makeup
Drying the colours with air only after application is essential, as is a light dusting of clear setting powder. An extra step that I took off camera and totally on a whim was a couple of spritzes of Makeup Forever's Mist & Fix setting spray. After taking these precautions, the makeup did not move, crease, or smudge for the entire time of filming and the extensive photo session that followed. It was still perfect when our model went to take the makeup off. For giggles, I told him to soak his face with water and dry it to see what would happen. Nothing moved in the least. Silicone eye makeup offers perfect and super fast blending possibilities, and when properly set is indestructible. I hope this video will inspire more makeup artists to experiment with it, as it is definitely worth it.

The whole tutorial was shot using Temptu's starter kit with the 2.0 compressor and the brand new SP 40 airbrush. We also used AirPod for blush and final highlights. We will post an in depth review of the system very soon. You can also find a review of the whole S/B line here and here
